Description
Black reinforced plaster or other resin figure of an African woman in tribal costume carrying what appears to be a Basket on her head. The top of the basket is in fact a bowl. This object could have been used in the 19th century at the entry door to receive calling card for visitors. The basic material is a mystery as it sounds like a ceramic body however it is light weight which may mean that it is resin or some other composition. The surface has medium gloss finish. There is no marking. Entire sculpture is black. This figure could be the more contemporary version of a 19th cent blackamoor
The figure stands 43" tall and would function in most interiors at a door to receive car keys or the like
